5 Teens Suspected of Counterfeiting With Computers
Police suspect five teenagers of using school computers and color printers to turn out counterfeit money.
Six bogus bills have turned up and authorities have found evidence of electronic images of bills in student computer files.
“With a quick glance and a feel, they look pretty good,” Officer Robert Millen told the Boston Globe. “The color is really good.”
The availability of document scanners that produce computer images, in addition to color photocopiers, has put counterfeiting within the reach of average people, said Secret Service Special Agent James Sloan.
School officials in Weston, the richest city in the state, have tightened rules on using school scanners. But Supt. Meredith Jones said that may not be enough.
“I’m told there are kids who have scanners at home,” she said.
