Officials Debate Site for Farmers Market
City officials and business owners in downtown Yorba Linda agree that a farmers market would be good for the town, but they haven’t decided yet where it should be.
“We are really excited about this,” said Councilwoman Barbara Kiley, who has been working with the Main Street Merchants Assn. to establish the market.
The consensus is that the site must be downtown, but there are few open spaces large enough to accommodate the 18 to 20 produce vendors who have agreed to come to Yorba Linda each week.
The merchants are recommending that it be in a city-owned parking lot across the street from the public library on Olinda Street. But some council members say the area is too cramped.
Another issue is whether to wait until the city finishes paving the lot before opening the market. Patricia Haley, director of community development, said the city has applied for a grant to pay for the paving but will not get the money for several months.
City officials said they will study the feasibility of holding the market on that site while searching for others downtown.
