Believing in God

Share

Regarding the two Youth Opinions (‘Should I Believe in God?’ Feb. 16), they were both well written, but they perpetrated a distortion by implicitly suggesting that opinion on God’s existence is evenly divided. I would estimate that over 90% of people entertain some belief in God. Your editorial page’s attempt to show neutrality was perhaps self-defeating in that it seemed to affirm the third of three possible positions: theism, atheism, and agnostism. Agnosticism can hardly claim to reflect the values of the communities you serve.

The Times obviously views itself as a promoter of civic improvement, but a hesitation to acknowledge the most powerful, energizing, and unifying force within the community can only limit its influence.
