Officials Will Weigh Cuts to Balance Budget

Share

The city’s long-term financial plan will be the focus of a special all-day meeting today, and the public is encouraged to attend.

The City Council will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the council chambers to talk about tightening the budget and how to cope with Proposition 218, which limits cities in raising revenue.

Officials estimate the city will lose as much as $2.8 million a year. Those lost funds are now collected through special tax zones, such as the lighting and landscape district, which maintain beaches, parks and street lighting.

City employees will offer the council several budget-cutting options to help erase the city’s anticipated shortfall.

In a budget hearing at a council meeting Wednesday, staff members indicated they may recommend abolishing the lighting and landscape district. To raise funds, they suggested hiking green fees at the Municipal Golf Course, eliminating a performance pay program for city administrators and raising parking meter fees 25 cents to $1 an hour.

The long-term financial plan is available to read at City Hall and at the library. Copies of the document are available for $16 from the city.

The Saturday session will be televised on Cox Cable’s Channel 30. A public hearing on the financial plan is also scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers.

City Hall is at 100 Avenida Presidio. Information: (714) 361-8200.
