Deng Xiaoping

* Thank you for the fantastic articles about the death of China’s leader, Deng Xiaoping (“China’s Deng Xiaoping, 92, Dies,” Feb. 20). The depth and scope of the articles were admirable; they must have been researched for some time before his death.

I would like to see more such articles--but why wait until a leader is dead? There are hundreds more national leaders, people who shape the world we live in, about whom we could know more.

* Among the many pages and pictures you published about the death of Deng Xiaoping, it was a glaring omission that not one photograph of the Tiananmen Square massacre appeared. This man was responsible for the slaughter of at least 1,000 people and for the imprisonment and oppression of countless others. Where are those photographs? Where is the photograph shown around the world of the young man confronting a tank?

Instead, we have photographs of grandpa being kissed by his adorable grandchild, of Deng sharing a meal with then-President Ford, of meeting with Nancy and Ronald Reagan. Plus a subhead that “human rights activists give fallen leader credit for advances.” Shame on you!
