The Orange County Performing Arts Center’s development director, Gary A. Neiger, has stepped down to be closer to his family in San Diego, center officials announced Monday. Neiger’s position may be restructured or eliminated when the center hires a vice president for development in the coming months, a spokesman said. Meanwhile, Neiger’s responsibilities are being assumed by the center’s development staff. Neiger joined the center in 1995.

“Sunset Boulevard” was taken out of the Aug. 23-Sept. 14 slot at Orange County Performing Arts Center, to be replaced by “Show Boat” in the same time slot, plus an extra week. The entire “Sunset” tour will be put on hold following a Chicago run scheduled to end on June 7. “Business could be much better,” said “Sunset” spokesman John Barlow, adding that routing of any future dates is being “reassessed.” Asked if a bigger star might replace the relatively unknown lead Linda Balgord--a role played by Glenn Close in Los Angeles--the spokesman said casting “is not being discussed and was not a factor in this decision.” Meanwhile, casting is still being determined for the center’s “Show Boat,” but it probably will be quite different from the cast that’s currently in L.A.
