State Aid Considered for Oil Recycling

In an effort to continue the city’s used-oil recycling program, the City Council tonight will consider applying for state grant money to maintain five oil collection centers.

The city may seek nearly $42,000 from a special California Integrated Waste Management Board program for its Recycle Placentia Program, which was started in 1994.

Grant money has been used to pay for state-certified used-oil collection centers at businesses throughout the city where residents can dispose of used motor oil at no charge. More than 4,360 gallons of used oil has been collected from residents at the centers.

The centers include Ralph Penella Chevron, Econo Lube ‘n Tune, Fairway Ford, Placentia Super Service and Placentia Car Wash.

Used oil is a hazardous waste and must be disposed of at household-waste collection sites, auto-care centers that agree to accept oil, usually for a fee, or through state-certified used-oil collection programs.

The city also has a residential program, also supported by grant money, where oil can be picked up directly from homes. More than 700 gallons of used oil has been collected from homes at no charge to residents. More than 110 used oil filters and more than 340 pounds of plastic containers also have been diverted from landfills.
