Firm Pulls Plug on Marcos Mausoleum
The lights went out on former President Ferdinand E. Marcos when, because his family has not paid the bill, a utility company cut electricity to a mausoleum where his corpse lies in a glass coffin. “This is the ultimate harassment, the harassment of the dead, the dead who cannot speak up to defend himself,” former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, now a congresswoman, told reporters in Manila. Workers of the Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative pulled the plug on the family compound in the northern Philippine town of Batac, Marcos’ home town, after the family failed to pay bills totaling $214,500, cooperative officials said.
