Prosecutors, Public Defenders Get Raise

The ratification of a labor agreement between Ventura County’s 140 prosecutors and public defenders and the county has ended a two-year pay dispute.

The Board of Supervisors approved the agreement Tuesday without comment.

The contract amounts to a 3% pay raise for the attorneys that will cost county taxpayers about $1.1 million over the two-year contract, said Barbara Journet, the county’s chief deputy human resources director.

But prosecutors and defenders will not achieve the wage parity they sought with the county’s civil lawyers.

“There will still be an approximately 5% pay difference,” Journet said.

A parity wage study will be conducted among the prosecutors’ and defenders’ counterparts elsewhere in Southern California as part of the contract agreement.
