Chief Williams’ Settlement Bid

Share

Re “Williams and LAPD: This Bad Marriage Needs to End,” editorial, March 3: You must be kidding! You are validating another trumped-up suit against the city. What is the point of Charter Amendment F, if not to empower the Police Commission to act as it may see fit? Let Chief Willie Williams sue. This is a suit that Los Angeles should be able to win.

Your position would set a terrible precedent. It would encourage everyone who feels slighted in any manner or aggrieved by any action to sue any employer, private or public, for a ransom settlement.

It is very strange that nobody heard much of, about, or from Williams for 4 1/2 years. Now, all of a sudden he has become highly visible. He is doing all this not to secure his position, but rather, to position himself for the legal action he clearly plans to initiate. Let’s take him on.

The Times endorses a payout settlement to Williams? What happened to the sanity of an employer hiring the person of choice, for whatever reason? Both sides honored the five-year contract. So The Times recommends ransoming ourselves? Because its easier? Cheaper?

Williams has probably done a good enough job to merit a second term, except for one thing. His threat to sue should automatically, instantly and unequivocally exclude him from any consideration for further service.

He is probably counting on our City Council members to display their usual pusillanimity by caving in to this legal blackmail.

Williams is holding Los Angeles hostage. Somebody call a SWAT team.
