Megan’s Law

Re “Megan’s Law Calling Up Old, Minor Offenses,” Feb. 24:

As a young(ish) gay man of the ‘90s, I was appalled to read about the latest humiliating indignities foisted upon my predecessors for harmless consensual acts committed 40 or 50 years ago.

My Chinese Vietnamese partner tells me that the “modern fervor for absolute knowledge” (to quote your article) reminds him of the communist purges he experienced 20 years ago. These were also instigated on the premise of society’s safety and likewise verged on the surreal.

Modern history has entire decimated cultures to prove that a quest for absolute knowledge comes from aspirations of absolute power. And they corrupt society absolutely--no matter what the justification.
