Windfall Will Fund Summer Internships, Art Programs

Arts programs and paid internships will be available to about 750 children this summer due to an unexpected, $1.6-million federal grant the city has received.

The Job Training Partnership Act grant will fully fund the city’s Summer Youth Employment Training Program, which includes 750 paid internships. Fifty students also will participate in a first-time arts program with the goal of presenting a play.

Officials said the city often does not find out until spring how much money it will receive for the summer employment programs, and this year’s $1.6 million is the largest chunk ever.

About $700,000 will pay for the internships and administrative costs related to placing 700 Santa Ana youths ages 14 to 21 at government and nonprofit agencies, said city JTPA coordinator Fran Jutzi.

The remainder of the grant will pay for another 50 students from Santa Ana High School to participate in the arts program and provide them with paid internships, officials said.

The City Council is expected to approve the grant at its meeting Monday night.

Also Monday, the council will consider revising water rates for apartment buildings and mobile home parks, and purchasing computer software equipment so that police officers can check the arrest records of suspects from their patrol car computers.

The council meets at 22 Civic Center Plaza at 6 p.m.
