Chapman University has received a $1-million gift toward its effort to build a new chapel on campus, officials announced Saturday.

Ann Wallace Fisher, who graduated from the private liberal arts college in 1964, made the donation, which brings the total fund for the nondenominational chapel to $4 million.

Fisher said the donation represents her family’s commitment to education and to the Southern California Disciples of Christ, which founded the college and in which her family is prominent.

Designed by noted architect E. Fay Jones, the chapel will be built in the center of campus and will be named the Wallace All Faiths Chapel.

Cathi Douglas, a spokeswoman for Chapman, said the university is $3 million short of its $7-million fund-raising goal for the project, which will include an endowment for a chapel dean to direct scholarly work as well as fill the role of chaplain.

Officials said they hope to complete the fund-raising and begin construction by year’s end.
