Johnson & Johnson settled a dispute that allows it to keep control of its unit that makes Confide, an at-home test for the HIV virus. Details of the agreement with a former executive who founded the unit weren’t disclosed. . . . Parsippany, N.J.-based HFS Inc. named R. Craig Hoenshell chief executive and chairman of its Avis Inc. as part of a plan to take the rental car unit public in the third quarter. . . . Salomon Inc. of New York agreed to sell Houston-based Basis Petroleum Inc. to Valero Energy Corp. for about $485 million. The deal would make San Antonio-based Valero one of the nation’s largest independent refining companies, owning and operating four refineries with total capacity of about 500,000 barrels a day. . . .
