Youths in Custody to Speak at School

Share

It’s no ordinary assembly.

From the rear of a middle school auditorium--as their probation officer shouts orders, a dozen juveniles in chains and Los Angeles County probation camp uniforms will march through a crowd of 200 schoolchildren and their parents today at Lonehill Middle School in San Dimas, in a dramatic presentation of what can happen to kids who get caught up in illegal activities.

The juveniles, a group of repentant kids in custody, have traveled to various county locations to talk to at-risk youth and their parents about the experiences that led them to probation camp.

“It’s their way to rehabilitate,” said Sheriff’s Deputy Ella Cooks. “They feel that maybe they can make a difference in someone else’s life.”
