7 Kashmiri Hindus Slain by Gunmen
Gunmen suspected of being Muslim rebels burst into the homes of Hindu villagers in the Kashmir region of northern India, took away seven men and shot them to death. The killings in Sangrampur, south of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir state, created panic among Hindu families in the only Muslim-majority state in mainly Hindu India. Police said the killers fled in the dark and troops were searching for them. No separatist group claimed responsibility for the killings, described by police as the worst such incident involving local Hindus. Hundreds of thousands of Hindus left the Kashmir region for Hindu-dominated areas after a Muslim separatist insurgency erupted there in 1989.
