Sheinberg Finds Solace After Ouster

Three days after learning she was off the U.S. ski team, Carrie Sheinberg turned in her best performance of the season, winning the giant slalom Sunday at the U.S. Alpine Championships.

Sheinberg, of Port Washington, N.Y., once a rising young member of the team, came from third place after the first run to win in a combined 2 minutes, 14.56 seconds at Sugarloaf-USA.

Tatum Skoglund of Bellevue, Wash., second after the first run, was the runner-up at 2:14.66.

Heidi Voelker of Park City, Utah, skiing her final race before retiring, was third at 2:14.67.

For Sheinberg, today’s slalom also could be her last race after U.S. coaches told her she no longer was wanted after six years.

She knew her victory here wouldn’t change anything, but she was excited nontheless.

“It was hard not focusing on all the things going on this week,” she said. “It was hard when you know people are not taking you seriously.”
