Forum to Focus on Special Needs Housing
A community forum will be held tonight in San Pedro by a coalition of homeowner and business groups calling for stricter regulations on government-subsidized residential housing programs for substance abusers, juvenile offenders and others.
The 7 p.m. event, sponsored by Community Advocates for Responsible Environmental Safety, is aimed at developing legislative proposals that can be adopted to slow the proliferation of so-called special needs housing programs that provide accommodations in residential neighborhoods.
San Pedro-based CARES has been mobilizing area residents and business owners for months because of that community’s growing number of special needs facilities.
Last month, in a move applauded by CARES, the Long Beach City Council agreed to enact a one-year moratorium on such housing in downtown Long Beach. The San Pedro group hopes for a similar action in its community by the Los Angeles City Council.
Among those invited to attend tonight’s meeting are Harbor-area Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr. The forum will be held at the Port Plaza Auditorium, 100 W. 5th St.
