POW/MIA Flag Issue Unfurls in Congress
Lomita Councilman David Albert is not one to give up the fight. What started as a local battle to fly the POW/MIA flag over Lomita’s post office has now gone to Congress.
Last year, Albert made a request to fly the distinctive black-and-white flag over the small city’s post office. Already, the flag flies over Lomita City Hall, at Lomita Park and at the city’s Railroad Museum. So why not the post office?
But Albert quickly learned that the U.S. Postal Service only allows the American flag to be flown at post offices.
The only way that could change would be to get an act of Congress. So last week Rep. Jane Harman (D-Rolling Hills) introduced legislation requesting that the POW/MIA flag be flown over federal buildings, including post offices, on six holidays--Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day and National POW/MIA Recognition Day.
