Former Mexican Deputy Atty. Gen. Mario Ruiz Massieu, under U.S. house arrest for a year while fighting extradition and deportation, was jailed briefly Tuesday by authorities who said he posed an increased flight risk, his attorney said.

Federal marshals arrested Ruiz Massieu on the grounds that a March 15 civil verdict in Houston, which found him guilty of taking millions of dollars in bribes from drug traffickers, “changed the circumstances” and made him more likely to flee, said attorney Cathy Fleming.

He was returned to house arrest after a hearing in Newark before U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service authorities, she said.
