Long Beach Port’s Deal With China

Share

I totally disagree with your March 26 editorial supporting the Long Beach Harbor Commission. They plan to tear down the Naval Station and build a container storage facility and lease it to Cosco, the Chinese government-controlled shipping company. This issue deserves an uproar by taxpayers who have paid many millions of dollars to build and operate this station.

Although the Navy has had to abandon the station due to cutbacks, it would be criminal to tear it down to accommodate Cosco. It seems to me that better uses could be found for the buildings and recreation areas. The Naval Station could be converted to a college or school campus, or for other public uses at minimum cost, as well as providing jobs.

I don’t feel very comfortable with the idea of giving up a valuable facility just to provide storage for cargo containers for a foreign company. I doubt if the Chinese government would be so generous to us. I sure hope that the uproar continues until the members of the Harbor Commission change their minds.
