The Savanna School District is the first in Orange County to receive a bilingual education waiver allowing English-only instruction without bilingual teaching assistants.
Granted by the state, the waivers allow districts to teach students with limited English skills the basic subjects like reading and math in English rather than in students’ native language.

“Support is done through materials in students’ primary language,” Johnson said.
