Plan Would Provide Housing for Seniors

A plan to build an affordable senior citizens’ apartment complex in the Wood Ranch area will come before the Simi Valley Planning Commission on Wednesday.

AMCAL Multi-Housing Inc. of Westlake Village wants to build about 10 two-story buildings on a 5.83-acre lot north of Country Club Drive, east of Wood Ranch Parkway, city planners said.

The 148 apartments would be for senior citizens with low incomes, who would pay monthly rental rates from $425 to $619, said Dulce Conde-Sierra, the city’s deputy director of housing. The complex is close to a shopping center at the corner of Wood Ranch Parkway and Country Club Drive, Conde-Sierra said.

AMCAL Multi-Housing wants to build on the property because company officials believe there is a strong demand for affordable senior housing in western Simi Valley.

“I think it’s a great location because it’s right near retail [stores] and a very nice neighborhood--Wood Ranch,” said Arjun Nagarkatti, vice president of development for AMCAL Multi-Housing.

Approval of the project would require that zoning for the site be changed from commercial to residential, city planners said.

The Simi Valley Planning Commission meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Simi Valley City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.
