Haft Family Reaches Pact in Business Feud

Herbert H. Haft, who over a half-century built a retailing empire from a single drugstore, agreed Monday to a $42-million buyout that would end a four-year feud that has split his family.

The tentative agreement came in federal bankruptcy court in suburban Greenbelt, Md., minutes before a judge was to appoint a trustee to take control of the Haft family’s real estate management company, Combined Properties Inc.

Haft’s settlement with Dart Group Corp.--parent company of the Crown Books, Trak Auto and Shoppers Food Warehouse chains--means that no member of his family will be involved in running Dart, sources told the Washington Post.
