Troops Sent to Town to Restore Order

The military sent soldiers to the oil-producing southern town of Warri to restore order between the Ijaw and Itsekiri people, authorities said. In Abuja, the capital, Petroleum Minister Dan Etete said the government would not tolerate any disruption to oil production caused by the feuding. Clashes broke out March 22 over the transfer of the local council headquarters from an Ijaw town to that of the Itsekiri group. Warri residents said armed soldiers were patrolling the streets and assigned to key sites in town.
