Spotlight: Chip Flaw Won’t Delay Pentium II Launch

The world’s biggest computer chip maker, Santa Clara-based Intel Corp., will release its speedy new Pentium II microprocessor Wednesday. However, Intel executives said they were looking into reports that the chip may contain a so-called floating point glitch that could cause computational errors. A similar problem bedeviled the original Pentium chip in 1994. A spokesman said the problem appears to crop up when a computer performs an obscure calculation. Intel has no plans to recall the chip.
