Suspect Arrested in Series of College Rapes

A comedian suspected in the attempted rape of a Pasadena student and a series of assaults at colleges across the Midwest was arrested Tuesday in Newark, N.J., as he stepped off a flight from Bermuda, authorities said.

Hours earlier, police in Omaha released an arrest warrant charging Vinson Horace Champ with first-degree sexual assault in the March 5 rape of a teacher at a computer lab at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Authorities suspect that Champ, 35, may have committed four rapes and two attempted rapes in February and March on small college campuses in Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois and Wisconsin. In each of the rapes, the attacker spit on his victims, quizzed them about their sex lives and asked them to pray for him.

Champ was released after posting a $7,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court June 10. On Tuesday he was awaiting extradition to Nebraska.
