Mall Fire Kills 130 in Preelection Riot

At least 130 people were killed when rioters set fire to a shopping mall during election campaign violence on the island of Borneo, police said. “Heaps of scorched human skulls” were found near three exits on the second floor of the mall in Banjarmasin, according to the official Antara news agency, and police fear more victims will be found. Mitra Plaza was closed and employees sent home when violence between supporters of the governing Sekber Golkar coalition and the rival, Muslim-dominated United Development Party began Friday, the last day of campaigning for this week’s parliamentary elections. Mobs broke into the building, and it was soon engulfed in smoke and flames.
