Gubicza May Have Surgery if Shoulder Doesn’t Heal

If rest doesn’t cure right-hander Mark Gubicza’s sore shoulder, the Angels acknowledged Saturday that surgery might be required.

Dr. Lewis Yocum examined Gubicza for the second time in less than a week. Yocum wants Gubicza to rest his shoulder until at least July 31, then test it. But Gubicza said surgery has not been ruled out.

“Hopefully, a little rest will clear it up and I can start pitching again soon,” said Gubicza, who has been on the disabled list since April 12 because of what’s been termed as “shoulder discomfort.”

Center fielder Jim Edmonds did not start for the second consecutive game because of a bruised left knee. He did not participate in batting practice and, as was the case Friday, was available only to pinch-hit.

“He can hit, but he can’t run,” Manager Terry Collins said.

Garret Anderson moved from left field to center to replace Edmonds. Tony Phillips replaced Anderson.

Second baseman Luis Alicea’s strained right hamstring also is troubling Collins. Alicea missed his second consecutive game and Collins doesn’t expect him to play until Tuesday.

“It’s the second time this year he’s strained the same hamstring, so I think it’s important to take some precautions,” Collins said.

Craig Grebeck started at second base.

TODAY’S GAME

ANGELS’ MATT PERISHO (0-1, 9.00 ERA) VS. TWINS’ KEVIN JARVIS (0-0, 11.00)

Anaheim Stadium, 1 p.m.

Radio--KTZN (710).

* Update--If neither of today’s starters is familiar, don’t worry. Neither is exactly a household name--unless you happen to be a scout or a serious fantasy-league player. Perisho, 21, is making his second major league start, having made his debut by giving up five runs on six hits in five innings in a 6-2 loss to Detroit last Tuesday. He’s a left-hander who was picked by the Angels in the third round of the 1993 draft. Jarvis, signed by the Twins after Detroit and Cincinnati each designated him for assignment in a two-week span, is making his second start of the season. He was 12-14 with a 5.97 earned-run average in 49 games, including 34 starts, over three seasons with the Reds.
