Nicaraguans Fear Mass Deportations

Fears that immigration officials would launch a wave of deportations gripped thousands of Nicaraguan migrants in Miami after a temporary restraining order lapsed. A federal judge was unable to reach a decision on a preliminary injunction against deportations, the next stage in the legal process, leaving the government free to begin sending migrants home. But U.S. District Judge James Lawrence King urged immigration officials against acting. After listening to three hours of lawyers’ arguments and faced with a pile of documents, King said it was “physically impossible” for him to make a swift decision on the injunction.
