Supermodel Naomi Campbell was recovering in a Canary Islands hospital Sunday after taking an overdose of barbiturates, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The 27-year-old model was taken to a hospital emergency room shortly after a heated late-night argument with her boyfriend, Spanish flamenco dancer Joaquin Cortes, the Spanish news agency EFE reported. Hotel guests complained of loud noises coming from her room.

Our Lady of the Pines Hospital officials said Campbell was in stable condition.

The hospital would not reveal further details of Campbell’s condition, but local media reported that the model had taken sedatives.

However, Campbell’s spokesman, Jonathan Goldstein of the law firm Olswang, ruled out any kind of overdose.

“Ms. Campbell is perfectly well and fully recovered and will be leaving the hospital. . . . She wishes to make it clear that there is absolutely no foundation whatsoever to the story that she had taken an overdose,” he said in a statement issued to Britain’s Press Assn. news agency.

The London-born model was in Las Palmas to attend Cortes’ show, “Gypsy Passion,” a combination of flamenco, ballet and jazz.

One of the highest-paid fashion models in the world, Campbell was hospitalized for two days in February after collapsing with stomach pains in a London street. She was released after tests for suspected appendicitis.

Campbell, along with supermodels Claudia Schiffer, Elle Macpherson and Christy Turlington, operates a string of theme restaurants called the Fashion Cafe in New York, London, Barcelona and other cities.
