Cambodia’s chief negotiator with Khmer Rouge rebels said Sunday that he had seen their elusive leader, Pol Pot, alive and held captive by dissident guerrillas in the northern jungles.

Gen. Nhek Bunchhay, who flew to their Anlong Veng stronghold Sunday, also said the guerrilla movement planned to formally end its rebellion against the government in a radio announcement today.

The Cambodian government hopes to put Pol Pot on trial for the policies that led to the deaths of more than 1 million Cambodians during his 1975-79 rule.
