Program to Prevent HIV Targets Latino Women

Share

A program that stresses the importance of self-esteem as a tool for preventing HIV and AIDS is working with Westlake and Pico Union residents to teach Latino women about the syndrome.

“People don’t have to come to us,” said Alice Heidy, executive director of Clinica Para Las Americas in Westlake. “We go out to them to teach.”

The 12-session program called Entre Mujeres (Between Women) does more than teach “how to put on a condom,” Heidy said. “In order to negotiate for safer sex, you need to have self-esteem. After all, it is their body.”
