Water Companies to Split $3.6-Million Windfall

Water retailers from Lynwood to La Habra Heights are expected to receive refunds soon from a regional water district that decided this week to distribute a $3.6-million windfall.

Rejecting arguments that the money would be better spent on repairs to regional water delivery systems, the Central Basin Water District approved dividing the money among about two dozen local utilities.

The district, which roughly encompasses southeast Los Angeles County, received the money earlier this summer from the Metropolitan Water District, which offered its members a rebate for water sources that it paid for last year but did not tap.

A representative for Central Basin said some local water companies have indicated that they will use the money to repair water lines in their cities.
