2 Groups Appeal Approval of Proposed Resort Hotel

The developer of a proposed luxury hotel and homeowner groups have both appealed the city Planning Commission’s approval of another hotel near the Malibu Civic Center, officials said.
The commission approved plans last month for a 146-room resort hotel on a 28-acre site at the northeast corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road, said Emmanuel Ursu, associate city planner.
The Malibu Property Owners Assn. and the Adamson Cos., developer of the proposed Rancho Malibu Hotel, subsequently filed appeals. Ursu said the homeowners’ appeal contends that the project is inconsistent with the goals of the city’s general plan and with the Civic Center specific plan, which is now being formulated.
Adamson filed an appeal contending that the commission should have approved its original 250-room hotel proposal. The company began trying to develop the Rancho Malibu Hotel in 1985, said Michael Vignieri, a spokesman for Adamson.
The City Council is scheduled to hear arguments from both sides at its Jan. 12 meeting.
