Religion at Work

Share

There is a vast difference between discussing football and discussing religion in the workplace (Nov. 28). If I do not enjoy discussing football I can “tune out” or walk away and I will not be pursued. I will not be called names nor threatened with eternal hell. I will not be criticized “with love.”

I worked in a school that had a principal and a large number of teachers who were active born-again Christians. I am not of that faith. I tried to ignore all religious comments. I said I did not want to discuss religion. It made no difference since proselytizing was an integral part of their belief. I once had a person come into my room (before the children arrived), take my hand and go to the four corners of the room praying that all evil in the room “be gone.” I made no comment since I knew the person sincerely believed she was helping me, but I felt under siege. It was horrible. I devoutly hope no court grants the right to proselytize any religion in the workplace.
