A statuette designed by an Orange Coast College art instructor will be awarded at the next Writers Guild of America ceremony honoring the entertainment industry’s best writers.

Karen Mortillaro of Huntington Beach beat out a dozen other artists who were asked for submissions. Her statues will go to 13 of the best television, radio and film writers at Feb. 21 ceremonies in New York City and Los Angeles.

“To become a part of Hollywood’s lore and history and to create a piece that will have lasting significance, much like the Oscar and Emmy, is very exciting,” she said.

The 14-inch bronze statue has yet to be named or publicly unveiled.

Guild members learned of Mortillaro’s work after visiting her studio in North Hollywood.

Mortillaro teaches two- and three-dimensional color and design classes at Orange Coast College.
