Most of the articles that have appeared to date about the Getty Center opening have dealt with inanimate things, like works of art or buildings. Of equal importance are the people who work at the Getty, and the significance of their efforts.

During the past year I’ve had the pleasure to work with Elizabeth Escamilla, museum education specialist for community audiences. Thanks to Elizabeth we were able to upgrade significantly our USC After-School Enrichment Program, after-school classes for K-5th graders taught by USC students in our five neighborhood schools. The Getty education staff trained our instructors, supplied materials and lesson plans, came to our five schools to model classes, and provided buses so we could take our kids to visit the museum.
