No Shortcuts, Just Fortitude

I have been following the weight-loss stories in the Health section over the past few weeks (“How I Did It” series). The Dec. 22 essay written by Ken Adams has compelled me to write.

I found it very refreshing and a testament to the human spirit that Mr. Adams was able to lose 170 pounds (that’s equal to another man!) without the aid of fad diets, drugs, supplements, etc. We as a society have come to expect the easy, softer solution to everything that ails us, particularly weight loss. Mr. Adams’ story reinforces the simple truth about weight loss: To achieve long-term weight loss, there is but one solution--eat a sensible diet low in fat, exercise and drink water. This is the “magic” formula.

The weight-loss industry would have us believe that this pill or that diet are cure-alls. The fact of the matter is that the word “diet” has come to mean a temporary solution to a problem that demands a lifetime behavior change. Mr. Adams, with his “cautious optimism,” will continue to find success. He has not sought a temporary solution, but has made necessary lifestyle changes.

Thank you for featuring his story. It should give others hope that the battle can be won as well as outlining a proven game plan for success. There is a simple truth related to any goal we may make in life underlying this story: You have to want to succeed.
