Meteorites at Machu Picchu Site Suggest It Was Working City
Peruvian archeologists have found a pair of tiny meteorites in the ruins of the ancient city of Machu Picchu, an important religious center of the pre-Colombian Inca empire.
The meteorites, found among a collection of carvings, rings, collars and other utensils, are thought to have been used by the Incas to hew stone and metal and suggest that the site was not only a religious center but a working city.
“The discovery of these meteorites, which were used as tools, confirms the hypothesis that Machu Picchu was used every day as a working city,” said Elba Torres, who is in charge of the archeological investigations in Machu Picchu.
