New Legislature Draws Protest

Shouts of “dictatorship” and “rubber stamp” marked the opening of the Beijing-appointed legislature after the new government tried to rush through laws curbing trade unions and immigration. The 60-member appointed legislature replaced the colonial assembly that was disbanded last week. Activists from pro-democracy groups demonstrated in central Hong Kong in a “day of mourning” for what they called the death of democracy.
