From Times Wire Reports

A right-wing death squad massacred as many as 30 people and tortured others in a remote eastern village, Red Cross and local officials said. The attack took place in Mapiripana, about 250 miles southeast of the capital, Bogota, over the weekend. Teddy Torbeaum, head of the Red Cross in Meta province, said the final death toll was not yet clear. “The mayor of Mapiripana . . . told me that at least 30 people had been massacred. But we will not know exactly how many dead there are until we can recover the corpses,” Torbeaum told Reuters by telephone. Other news sources reported that at least five men were killed. Right-wing death squads frequently target those they suspect of being leftist rebel sympathizers.
