Fasching Leads, but Chew Close in Bike Race

Wolfgang Fasching and Danny Chew were only two minutes apart in the Race Across America as they went through time stations Monday in Texas.

Fasching, the leader from Goritz, Austria, passed through time Station 27 in Quitaque, Texas, at 9:23 p.m. (PDT), 1,528.24 miles into the bicycle race that started Thursday in Irvine and ends in Savannah, Ga.

Chew, the defending champion from Pittsburgh, led by as much as 14 minutes earlier Monday.

Rob Kish of Port Orange, Fla., who won the race in 1992, 1994, 1995, is in third place, about 15 miles behind the leaders.

Kaname Sakurai of Nagoya, Japan, is in fourth place.
