Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian on Tuesday after he stabbed an Israeli soldier near a Jewish settlement in the West Bank, the army said in a statement.

Palestinians who saw the dead man’s identity card named him as Muadi Izzal Alawnweh, 18, from the West Bank village of Azmout.

Israel Radio and Army Radio said Alawnweh stood in a road to block an army jeep on patrol outside the Elon Moreh settlement near Nablus, then stabbed a commander when he got out of the jeep. One of the other soldiers shot Alawnweh, the statement said.

The commander was not seriously injured.

Palestinian officials said Israel closed off the area and initially prevented Palestinian police from investigating the incident. They said the Nablus police commander was later allowed to inspect the scene.

Israel has ceded parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip to Palestinian rule, but much of the territories remains under Israeli control.
