Protests Over Tibet Policy Planned for Jiang’s Visit

An ad hoc group that says the Chinese government is killing Tibetans is planning to stage protest rallies this weekend during the final leg of Chinese President Jiang Zemin’s trip to the United States.

The Coalition for Human Rights, which includes UCLA’s Students for a Free Tibet and the West Los Angeles-based Friends of Tibet, has scheduled a candlelight vigil for 5:30 p.m. today across from the Century Plaza Hotel, where Jiang is staying. The coalition also plans a rally at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Beverly Hilton, where Jiang is scheduled to address business leaders, said coalition organizer Tenzing Chonden, 30, a Tibetan living here.

The demonstrations are part of a nationwide wave of rallies protesting Chinese policy in Tibet, Chonden said.
