A fire at a Hollywood apartment building left 35 people homeless and caused an estimated $275,000 damage Saturday, authorities said.

The blaze was reported shortly before 7 a.m. in a 60-unit, three-story complex on north Mariposa Avenue, city Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said.

Firefighters used ladders to pluck several people from the smoke-enveloped building, Collis said. It took 85 firefighters about 20 minutes to douse the flames, he said.

One firefighter was treated at the scene for minor burns to his ear. A 57-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Collis added.

The fire burned two apartments and damaged six others, displacing 19 children and 16 adults, Collis said.

The Red Cross helped some and the landlord apparently also tried to help house some of the residents in other buildings, Collis said.
