Exiles Plan Laser Messages Over Cuba

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

About 40 Cuban exiles set sail across the Florida Straits, planning to use powerful laser lights to send pro-democracy messages into the night sky over Havana. The Miami-based Democracy Movement is well known for sending ragtag flotillas to the fringe of Cuban territorial waters to protest President Fidel Castro’s 38-year rule. The group’s lead boat was seized by the U.S. Coast Guard during a July flotilla soon after it set sail. This flotilla plans to stop 13 miles off Havana and try to spell out messages on nighttime clouds. Organizers hope to get the attention of the thousands of Cubans gathered at Havana’s Malecon sea wall.
