‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?’

This 1993 charmer stars Johnny Depp (pictured) as a small-town young man with crushing responsibilities, mainly a family with a retarded younger brother (Oscar-nominated Leonardo DiCaprio) and a widowed mother (Darlene Cates), so heavy she hasn’t left her ramshackle house in seven years. Then along comes free-spirited Juliette Lewis (pictured), just passing through. Director Lasse Halstrom (“My Life as a Dog”) has a wonderful way with amusing but highly poignant material and a terrific cast that includes Mary Steenburgen as a bored housewife (Cinemax Sunday at 8 p.m.).
