Grant Funds Upgrade of Police Computers
The city’s police officers will soon be able to access years of crime records from their patrol car computers and create instant maps showing local crime trends thanks to a $241,000 federal technology grant, the police chief announced Thursday.
The Westminster Police Department was among 96 agencies nationwide awarded technology grants this week by the U.S. Department of Justice, and the agency will use the money to replace their overtaxed, paper-based records system with a computerized version, Chief James Cook said Thursday.
The grant will pay for a system that scans documents directly into record archives, along with new statistical software for research and planning projects, according to Sgt. Derek Marsh. The systems should be running by late next year.
