Lucy Calkins is quite correct when she suggests we cut down on the competition for children’s reading time (Nov. 5). Living with no television in a rural area, reading has been our kids’ primary form of entertainment. Once in awhile when they misbehaved, I’d say, “Sorry, you’ve lost your right to read for today.” It was always fun to catch them “sneak reading,” and the guilty pleasures of illicit page turning only served to cement more soundly their love, their need, for reading.
